St. Dismas Conference: Helping Inmates Find Hope

St. Dismas Conference

St. Vincent de Paul of North Central Montana

What We Do

Every Wednesday evening, a dedicated group of St. Dismas conference members visits 100-200 inmates at the Cascade County Jail. During these visits, each inmate receives a small treat, along with writing and drawing paper. Our team offers a friendly presence and invites inmates to join us in prayer for themselves, their families, and their loved ones. Additionally, we distribute spiritual readings and devotionals upon request.

Why We Do It

We believe that God created each person on this earth and loves every one of us. This belief makes us brothers and sisters, called to love and care for each other as the Father loves and cares for us. No matter how far someone strays, God desires their return and welcomes them back with open, loving arms. At the St. Dismas Conference, we answer Cain’s question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” with a resounding YES!

Our History

Around 1970, when Cascade County was still using the old jail by the library, a group of dedicated Catholic men, including John Fassler, Tom Furlong, and Dick Bennett, initiated this prison ministry. The program flourished, and before the COVID-19 pandemic, it had grown to include over a dozen volunteers. These volunteers ensured that every inmate received candy, paper, and shampoo each week. Additionally, we provided Christmas, birthday, and Mother’s Day cards, along with prayer materials and prayer sessions.

Our Future

The imprisoned will always be with us. Currently, only six people are authorized by the sheriff’s office to enter the jail, and on any given Wednesday night, 3-4 may be available for service. Those who used to prepare the candy, paper, shampoo, and devotional books each week have had to retire due to health and disability. We urgently need volunteers to visit the jail and others to provide support services for those who do. There may be other forms of service we can offer inmates, and we welcome new ideas to keep our ministry relevant and useful. Above all, we ask for prayers for this important ministry.
